Transmissions

The transmission system in your car is integral to a properly functioning engine. When you run into a transmission problem, the repairs can range from simple to intense and costly. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to monitor your transmission and keep it running smoothly. If you need help, take your vehicle to Lenny’s Auto Service where we provide a full range of transmission services.

Fluid

Check your transmission fluid whenever possible. If you have low levels of fluid, you may have a leak. Look for bright red colors and slightly sweet smell when you check the fluid. If it smells bad or has an extremely dark color, bring your vehicle to us so we can take a closer look. If you decide to replace the fluid on your own, make sure you use the type recommended in your owner’s manual. When in doubt, bring it in.

Cooling System

The cooling system in your car keeps the engine from overheating but it can also ensure that the transmission fluid pumping through the gearbox stays cool. If you notice that your engine temperature is rising when you drive, it’s extremely important to bring it in for service as soon as possible. It could be the cooling system itself, but in some cases, you may be in need of transmission system repair.

Fluid Flush

It’s not a cardinal rule, but you should still get your transmission fluid flushed once a year for optimal performance. The frequency of how often you should have this done can depend on your vehicle’s recommendations along with how much driving you do on a daily or weekly basis. If you only drive your car occasionally, you may not need a system flush as frequently as you would if you do a lot of heavy driving. Your mechanic can take a closer look and determine if a flush is needed. The transmission filter should also be changed.

Driving Habits

There are a few other things you can do to ensure your transmission stays healthy. First, avoid changing gears when your car is moving. This puts a serious strain on the transmission system and can cause wear and tear much faster. Allow your vehicle to warm up before you drive, particularly during the cold winter months. Make sure your tires are all matching and in good condition, and never drive on a spare for a long period of time. This can damage not only your transmission but also your wheel alignment and other parts of your vehicle.
